Stanford Splash is a program that brings around 2000 local middle school and high school students to Stanford’s campus for a weekend twice a year to take classes taught by Stanford undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral associates. Stanford students choose any subject they are passionate about to teach; previous classes include cryptography, watercoloring and the American Constitution. The administrative team provides resources for first time teachers and encourages a campus culture of lifelong learning and teaching. Over 600 Stanford students participate in the program over the course of the year. Special fees have enabled us to control costs to the students and teachers alike, while expanding our programs and offering food at the events as well. We estimate that we would have to increase tuition for the Splash events to at least $60/student (it is currently $40/student) to cover our operating budget without Special Fees. In particular, this would cripple our ability to provide reimbursement to teachers for expenses in preparing their courses, and would discourage volunteering accordingly. Additionally, this would make the event less accessible and would prevent us from offering financial aid and having an extensive outreach program.
