Akasma Bellydance is Stanford's only belly dancing group on campus. We bring together the diverse and beautiful styles of belly dance from around the world and perform both tribal and oriental styles with veils and swords. As a relatively new group, Akasma has been growing over the years and expanding where and what we perform. Last year we began competing in California and incorporating more props into our routines. This year we have nearly doubled in size and started performing with swords. In the future we are hoping to compete at more nationally recognized competitions throughout the country. As our group expands, we are struggling to acquire costumes for everyone. The money we get from ASSU will help us purchase the costumes necessary for us to compete at national levels and provide us with the transportation costs necessary to get to these competitions. We also plan to share the beauty of belly dance with the rest of the Stanford community through hosting workshops, dancing at major dance shows, and hosting our own spring show.
